Splunk Boss of the SOC
An in-person security competition for the curious, the Splunk-curious, and anyone ready to hunt with SPL — or just hang with good people. Come with a team or on your own; if you fly solo, we’ll match you with someone skills-appropriate.
When & where
Turn up, plug in, hunt.
Be there before 3pm so you don’t miss the briefing. Pizzas and refreshments land around 5pm — and New World is nearby if hangry hits early.
How to sign up
Two steps. Both matter.
In-person seats, pizzas, and beverages need a headcount — and Splunk needs your event registration.

Q + A
The questions we keep getting asked
Do I need to be a Splunk user?
No. Splunk knowledge will help for sure, but anyone interested is welcome. Just interested in security? Sure, come along anyway. Want to pwn those evil hackers with your L337 h4x0r SPL skills? Perfect. Use another tool and curious about Splunk? Neato.
What knowledge do I need?
It’s probably a good idea to try some of the on-demand exercises at bots.splunk.com so you know what to expect. If those don’t make sense, maybe look at some of the free training.
How do I sign up?
You need to do two things:
- If you are joining GKC in Wellington in person, email david.anso@gkc.co so we know to expect you — seats, pizzas, beverages, the works.
- Register for the event with Splunk.
Is there a code of conduct?
Yes. Be awesome to each other.
Do I have to use my real name, work email, or tell people what I do?
No. Use a burner email address. Dress up as your favourite hacker if you want. Only answer to their handle (sorry, Crash Override is taken). Tell people your career is Hacking the Gibson. But if you break the code of conduct so much that the police turn up, they probably won’t accept those answers — that’s on you.
What do I have to bring?
A laptop you can compete on. Bus money to get home. Clothes — wear clothes. An awesome attitude. Your acceptance of others.
Are we going to be in a team?
Come with a team or on your own — both are welcome. There’s a limit to team size, so we can’t be one giant team. Feel free to start a team with friends and workmates and drag them along. If you arrive solo, we’ll team you up with someone skills-appropriate. Depending on numbers, GKC will either join some teams or float around to support them.
Will there be Wi‑Fi?
Do we still ask that? Sure will. Just scan one of the QR codes. I promise it’s not a virus…. I can’t promise everyone on the Wi‑Fi is friendly. But also, be friendly on the Wi‑Fi.
Will there be power?
Powerpoints will be a Rashuned resource. Eat the Rashuns; no power for you.
I get hangry if I don’t eat.
That’s not a question. But hey, I get the same way. We’ll arrange some pizzas and refreshments — probably around 5pm. We’re also near New World. They’ve been known to have food on occasion.
When is it?
Thursday 6 August 2026. Turn up from 2:30pm. The event runs 3:00pm – 7:30pm (be there before 3 so you don’t miss the briefing).
Where do I turn up?
GKC — Level 4, Dominion Building, 78 Victoria Street, Wellington 6011.
Ready to hunt?
Come with a team or fly solo — then complete both signup steps and show up early.
